There are a number of ways that visitors can get around London, but some of
them are clearly going to be cheaper and easier than others.
There are various options for tourists, including the
bus, the tube and the over ground train. The most appropriate
way to get around largely depends on the circumstances
of the individual and who they are travelling with.
Probably the cheapest and fastest way to travel is the
tube, especially if the visitor in question is looking
to try and see as many famous attractions as possible.
Tube tickets are best bought at the station before any
travelling has been done, and they can be bought depending
on which zones the user will be entering. For example,
all the main London attractions, museums and places of
interest are found within zones 1 to 4, so most tourists
should buy a zones 1 to 4 day tube ticket. These tickets
are very cheap, with a zones 1 to 4 ticket costing just
£1 for a child, £5 for a student or £6 for an adult. These
tube tickets can also be used on buses within the selected
zones, so purchasing one of these tickets is probably
the best way to travel.
Using cabs in central London is probably not advisable,
as they are often very expensive. Because of traffic it
may also take a long time to reach the destination in
question, so it is often more advisable to get a tube
or a bus. However, in the suburbs and just outside of
London taxis are much faster and cheaper, so are used
more. It is always a better idea to get a taxi than walk
alone through a park, for example, as long as the taxi
is pre-ordered –never get in one that pulls up in the
street, unless it is clearly a taxi rank.
One thing that people forget about London is that most
things are quite close together, and in the day time it
might often be nicer to take a stroll through one of the
royal parks, rather than instinctively jumping straight
on the bus on tube. A map will point out that things really
are close together, especially round the parks. Walking
through them can be very enjoyable, and will give a whole
new perspective to a London visit.
